I started my career in education with a Teaching and Youth work qualification and a degree in the Sociology and Philosophy of Education.
I worked for Christian Aid as their national Education Adviser in Youth Work and then went on to train youth and community workers across the North of England.
At the same time, I worked on the establishment of Traidcraft Exchange, the education and international development arm of the Traidcraft Group.
I was then appointed General Director of Traidcraft Exchange and was the representative of the controlling shareholders on the Traidcraft PLC Board. I went on to forge the rest of my career in the development and growth of Fair Trade and the promotion of ethics in business generally.
My key contribution was in the strategic development of this work nationally and internationally. I was formative in the development of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO), the European Association (EFTA), the ethical investment IPS Shared Interest, the Fairtrade Foundation, the Ethical Trading Initiative and various enterprise development organisations in the global south.
I was also involved in the early work on Social Accounting and Reporting and advised various businesses as a freelance consultant.
I presented live ‘outside broadcast’ TV programmes for BBC1 and studio based programmes for ITV1 over a period of six years.
I now spend my time consulting and in interim management, particularly in times of change or crisis.
I bring clarity of vision and purpose, strong management skills, persuasive communication skills, credible leadership and effective chairing skills coupled with a good sense of humour.
In 2013 I finished a six year term as a Trustee of SolarAid, a charity bringing solar energy to those ‘off-grid’ in Africa with the aim of banishing the kerosene lamp with its inherent dangers, health hazards and carbon footprint.
I have recently started a term as a Trustee of Practical Action, an International Development NGO challenging poverty with technology. Practical Action is a £30 million development practitioner based on three continents and an internationally acclaimed knowledge broker with its own publishing house.
I have had a recent additional focus on the beautiful Teesdale, in which I live. I chaired a very successful £2.7 million Landscape Partnership which was shortlisted for the National Lottery Awards. I have also recently raised £1.8 million for a trial 'Great Place Scheme' called Northern Heartlands, which came out of the DCMS White Paper of 2016.
